What is M.A.P.A.S.?

Mannville and Area Performing Arts Society

MAPAS is a theatre group that was formed in 1983 by a group of enthusiastic individuals from Mannville, Minburn, Innisfree, Vermilion, Myrnam, and probably other areas for the purpose of performing the musical play Oklahoma. This play required the participation of actors and back stage individuals from the ages of elementary school students to senior citizens. That range in age of membership has stayed with us till today and we are very proud of it.

WHO CAN BELONG TO M.A.P.A.S.?
Anyone can be a member—from those who need parental permission to be a member to those that have Senior Citizen status. The main prerequisite is the willingness to work together with all members in a positive manner.

WHAT SKILLS MUST ONE HAVE TO JOIN?
It may help to be able to act, sing, dance, play a musical instrument, draw, paint, sew, build with wood and other materials, operate lighting and sound equipment, get involved at the executive level [making the organization tick] but most of all one must be willing to learn to do any one of these. Most of the members started without mastery of any of these skills but wanted to learn at least one of them.

WHAT DOES M.A.P.A.S. DO?
Besides putting on productions in different communities for its own fundraising, M.A.P.A.S. will put on productions for other groups in different communities to help them fund raise.
During the last few years the technical group from M.A.P.A.S. assisted other community groups by providing trained technicians and lighting and sound equipment to enhance he function or production that the other community groups was producing. Just a few groups that were assisted in this way were: Mannville Library Board, FCSS Youth Group, Royal Canadian Legion, Innisfree Figure Skating, Mannville Figure Skating, Mannville-Vermilion Highland Dance, Mannville Grad. Classes, Vermilion Dance Association …

WHAT CAN ONE GAIN FROM BELONGING TO M.A.P.A.S.?
If anything, a growth in self-esteem. Whether one is talented in any of the skills that are required by the group is almost irrelevant. Since its conception the members of M.A.P.A.S. have worked together to make each other feel good about themselves. Many young members of M.A.P.A.S. have obtained careers in acting, the media, and related fields. High School students receive high school credits in Special Projects for their involvement with M.A.P.A.S. if the school they attend does not teach Drama as a school subject. A scholarship is awarded to students for each high school year of involvement with M.A.P.A.S.
If you are an adult, involvement with us will not only give you the satisfaction of accomplishment and working together with other adults, you will also be given the joy of working with youth. We don’t have a generation gap—all members are young at heart.
25 years running!
